Sophie Milman, the Toronto-based jazz singer whose unique style has captivated audiences worldwide, makes a significant leap on her third album, taking familiar songs into new territories and branching out by bringing pop songs into the jazz repertoire.
Sophie’s brand new recording on the E1 Label, debuted in September 2011! Her other recordings have landed her top spots on the iTunes Jazz Chart upon release making it her second straight album to do so. Sophie's album, Make Somone Happy, won "Vocal Jazz Album of the Year" at the 2008 Juno Awards.
Sophie Milman and her quartet have performed around the globe. They have toured landmark venues like the Hollywood Bowl and the Kennedy Center. Sophie sold out New York’s Blue Note club and has shared stages with the likes of Chick Corea, Aaron Neville, Chris Botti, Ramsey Lewis and the Manhattan Transfer.
The accolades have followed. JazzTimes referred to her as Canada’s hottest young jazz singer. NPR’s Weekend Edition praised her “classic jazz voice that evokes smoky lounges, softly clinking glasses and the cool of the night.” DownBeat simply said, “she captivates.” Thee Los Angeles Times raved, “the sky’s the limit for this exceptional young talent.”
Sophie Milman’s voice and musicality express passion and wisdom beyond her years, perhaps influenced by her colorful and at times dramatic past. Born in Ufa, Russia, Sophie learned the art of jazz at a young age by singing along to the “Great North American” jazz records that her father acquired through the underground in communist Russia. Sophie immigrated to Israel with her family when she was 7. At 16, she was uprooted again, this time to Canada. Living in Toronto, Sophie learned to fluently speak her 4th language, English, and began to pursue a career as a singer. After just 3 or 4 professional singing engagements, Sophie was offered a recording contract. Her first two albums sold over 200,000 copies worldwide. They hit the Billboard Jazz Top 5 in Canada and the Top 15 in the United States. The albums also topped the iTunes jazz charts in 5 different countries, including the U.S.
Her sultry voice sounds like “whiskey and honey,” says the LA Times, “...it’s obvious she is one of a kind.”
With so much already accomplished, “Sophie Milman clearly has the ability to turn heads in the jazz world,” Billboard.
